Turkey did not actually join the triple alliance but they were fighting along side those central powers. What turkey wanted was to protect the black sea from Russia. The Soviets had only North Sea ports and one Pacific port, at Vladivostok, northwest of Japan. The Northern ports are ice-locked for part of the year, and the one on the Pacific is thousands of miles from the manufacturing centers in Eastern Europe and Western Asia, and even farther after you go around China, which is in the way. Odesa, on the Black Sea, is the only warm water port on the entire periphery of the "homeland". And so turkey thought that by joining the "all powerful" Germans, they would be able to keep total control over that port.
