Because of the weather, among other reasons. By the time Hitler set to conquer the USSR it was winter. He hadn't foreseen how climatic conditions could affect his campaign, and so, the extremely low temperatures weakened his army. That's the main reason why Hitler failed to conquer the USSR. Note that Napoleon made the same mistake at his time: heading for Russia in winter
