Serbia never wanted to assaaainate Archduke Francis Ferdinand, a terrorist group called the Black Hand wanted to kill him because they did not like the fact the Austria-Hungary ruled Bosnia (where many Serbs and Slavs lived), and did not like the changes that Ferdinand planned to make.

Austro-Hungary was looking for a reason to punish Serbia for its support in Franz Ferdinand's deaf. Franz Ferdinand would have become emperor in 1916;. This would have considerably eased nationalist tensions. If Ferdinand had not been assassinated, then Austro-Hungary would have found another reason to bully Serbia into war. The killing of Franz Ferdinand was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Serbia would have been supported by Russia, because they are allies, which was seeking to limit Austro-Hungary's influence in the Balkans since the Russians considered the area their backyard. Germany would have still supported the Austrians against the Russians and mobilized their troops. Supporting both France and Russia on the Continent, and opposing Germany, Franz Ferdinand was not a popular man at all. In fact his family didn't even attend his funeral. Austria wouldn't have had the opportunity to make impossible to meet demands. All they could have done was ask for an apology and the whole incident would be forgotten. It only became a landmark incident because it triggered WW1!

Many people credit the Assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand with being the event that through Europe into war. While it was a catalyst, it was not the only factor. Austria-Hungary used the assassination as an excuse to wage war against Serbia, to be honest the Austria-Hungarian Empire didn't even really like Ferdinand all that much. If it wasn't for an arms race, militarism, nationalism, colonialism, and economic factors, I doubt his assassination would have resulted in a World War at all.

But if he had not been assassinated, Austria-Hungary would not have had an excuse to wage war with Serbia, and the system of alliances would have never taken affect, and Germany would most likely not have invaded France. Many believe the outcome of the First World War caused the second. Had it not been the Archduke's assassination, it would have been some other incident that caused the war.
