Because there was no concept of cast in these religions.Jainism and Buddhism appealed to people with a spiritual orientation and status had no bearing to these decisions. If people like the underlying philosophy of an ideology, they start believing in it.

In the old times, no. Different caste systems were in place and the lower you were in the caste system the worse you were treated and you were born into a caste system and could never get out of it. Though you could be a wonderful Hindu philosopher in the untouchable class. Now the caste system has essentially vanished though.
