Why was Dmitri kabalevsky famous for being in the Soviet Union?

This question is particularly clear, but if you want to know the reason for Kabalevsky's fame, the answer lies mainly in his ability to produce original and creative music within what many see as constrained conditions. His music has the ability to entertain, as well as being accesible to a wide audience. In the West much of his choral and operatic work is rarely performed, though it remains popular in Russia. However his concertos, particularly the violin 'youth' concerto and the 2nd piano concerto are amongst his most well-known works. Kabalevsky also produced a large amount of music for children, particularly for the piano. Although Kabalevsky lacks the prestige of composers such as fellow countryman Shostakovich, his music does possess an optimism and lightness lacking in much 20th century music. Harry Dadswell
