It is true that the early British and French colonists settled along the Atlantic coast, because by the time their ships reached the North American continent they were almost out of food, and had to begin to farm immediately. As they became more secure in their supply of food, and transportation, they moved westward.
The Spaniards, however, settled in Florida, Mexico and northward into California. They reached the Americas by way of the Atlantic, but the narrowness of the parts of the continent in which they settled led to the colonization of the Pacific Rim of North America.
Because people use the term "Colonies" or "Colonial" to refer to the pre-Revolutionary era in the East, the term has generally come to mean that area of the continent only.
