My studies of the American Revolution indicate that the British generals who opposed George Washington mostly respected him as a military leader and a worthy opponent. Also, King George of Great Britain, on hearing that Washington would not allow the military to make him king of America said, "If he does this, then he is truly the greatest man alive."

When the nation was a new, there were two factions that were fighting for control of the new government. The two groups of course were the federalists and the democratic-republicans. The second group eventually became the democrats. George Washington was never part of either party but his views often sided with the federalists who desired a strong central government. Towards the end of his administration, the democratic repulicans sought war with France and a reduction of a central government's authority. Ironically, when the democratic republicans eventually took control of the government, they actually increased the power of the central government. Much of the ideas of a strong central government that some of the founders sought, such as george washington, was not to the extreme it is today. They realized that without some form of a strong central government that the union would dissolve. That is where some people wrongly dislike Washington. They feel that he represents the current strong federal government that exists today and these people often quote Thomas Jefferson as their source of inspiration. The reality is that George Washington was really somewhere between the federalists and the democratic republicans, but he did understand what was needed to maintain the union. People who "hate" Washington really should focus their attention elsewhere, such as Hamilton, who truly wanted a tight control over the states. Without George Washington's input as president, the nation would not exist today. He kept the union together and those who dislike him really don't understnad how he was indispensible.
