Hernan Cortes was not "sent" by any royalty. Cortes was born to a family of minor nobility from a very poor area of Spain known as Estremadura. When he was about 18 he went to Valencia on Spain's east coast with a view to particpating in the Italian wars. Instead about a year later he sailed for the island of Hispaniola. At that time he was 19. He was a farmer there for 6 years before he associated himself with minor authorities and began to work to increase his prospects and circle of more powerful friends.
