"Jehovah" is the best known English pronunciation of the divine name, although "Yahweh" is favored by most Hebrew scholars. The oldest Hebrew manuscripts present the name in the form of four consonants, commonly called the Tetragrammaton (from Greek te·tra-, meaning "four," and gram′ma, "letter"). These four letters (written from right to left) are יהוה and may be transliterated into English as YHWH (or, JHVH).

The Hebrew consonants of the name are therefore known. The question is, Which vowels are to be combined with those consonants? Vowel points did not come into use in Hebrew until the second half of the first millennium C.E. Furthermore, because of a religious superstition that had begun centuries earlier, the vowel pointing found in Hebrew manuscripts does not provide the key for determining which vowels should appear in the divine name. There are two main reasons the divine name is not used.

First, many claim that the name should not be used because the original way to pronounce it is unknown today. Therefore, no one today can say for sure exactly how people of Bible times pronounced YHWH. However, should this prevent us from using God's name? In Bible times, the name Jesus may have been pronounced Yeshua or possibly Yehoshua-no one can say for CERTAIN. Yet, people the world over today use different forms of the name Jesus, pronouncing it in the way that is common in their language. They do not hesitate to use the name just because they do not know its first-century pronunciation. Hence, uncertainty about the ancient pronunciation of God's name is no reason for not using it.

Second reason often given for omitting God's name from the Bible involves a long-standing tradition of the Jews. Many of them hold that God's name should never be pronounced. This belief is evidently based on a misapplication of a Bible law in Exodus 20:7. This law forbids the misuse of God's name. But does it forbid the respectful use of his name? The writers of the Hebrew Bible (the "Old Testament") were all faithful men who lived by the Law that God gave to the ancient Israelites. Yet, they made frequent use of God's name in Joel 2:32 and Acts 2:21 Hence, Christians today do not hesitate to use God's name respectfully, as Jesus surely did.-John 17:26.

In replacing God's name with titles, Bible translators make God seem remote and impersonal, whereas the Bible urges humans to cultivate intimacy with him (Psalm 25:14) Think of an intimate friend of yours. How close would you really be if you never learned your friend's name? Similarly, when people are kept in ignorance about God's name, "Jehovah" or "Yahweh", how can they become truly close to God? Furthermore, when people do not use God's name, they also lack knowledge of its wonderful meaning.

(Side note) Once you know the meaning of YHWH and Jesus the theory of Jesus being god is greatly diminished. (Exodus 3:14) Rotherham's translation renders those words: "I Will Become whatsoever I please."

Jesus' name is usually considered to be a compound of two parts: יהו Yeho, a theophoric reference to YHWH, the distinctive personal name of the God of Israel, plus a form derived from the Hebrew triconsonantal root y-š-ʕ or י-ש-ע "to liberate, save". There have been various proposals as to how the literal etymological meaning of the name should be translated, and they all refer to yahweh. Yahweh is much more important once you examine it then Jesus. jesus said it himself i have come to do the will of him that sent me.

Jehovah is the name of the Sovereign Lord of the Universe. He is who created us. His name appears in the bible nearly 7,000 times. More then any other descriptive name of God. The New World Translation put Jehovah's name back in the bible. The King James version has Jehovah's name written in it... ex Psalms 83:18.

The reason why Jehovah's name was taken out of the bible is because of a superstitious idea that began among the Jews. They thought it was wrong to pronounce that name. First they avoided using the divine name, then it eventually resulted in removal of God's personal name from the Greek manuscripts of the Holy scriptures. Then eventually the divine name was completely replaced by "Lord" and "God".

It is very important that we know Jehovah's name. It is a way to draw close to him.

In the Hebrew scriptures, "Jehovah" is a mysterious unpronouncable series of letters that translate into English as: JHVH or YHWH or YHVH. The word "Jehovah" came about when someone filled "JHVH" in with vowels to make it "pronouncable."

"YHWH" filled in, comes out as: "Yahweh."

"YHVH" is rendered "Yehovah."

When the dust settles... it's all very confusing to the average person... literally beyond human comprehension to "put a label on our Creator" (His name is Jesus Christ - John 1:3) the "WORD" of God.

JHVH means in English "Eternal" or "self-Existent."

Jesus told Moses from the burning bush: "I AM THAT I AM... thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." (Ex.3:14).

I AM is simply a conjugated form of the verb "TO BE." It's a simple "state of being"... a "state of existence." Is, am, was, were, are, be, become - our Creator "WAS, IS, SHALL BE"... He Eternally lives. He IS.

"Eternal" is His name. Actually, He has many names... but in the case of "JHVH"... "Eternal" would be the most accurate English rendering.

The capitalized word, "LORD" is just an English attempt to maintain the "JHVH" in some Old Testament translations. Neither LORD nor Jehovah are totally accurate, but when working with the English language that was just forming in the days of Christ in the flesh, they aren't necessarily all bad, either.

To try to get the truest understanding of God's name, we have to go to the next verse in Exodus 3:

"...God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: THIS IS MY NAME FOR EVER, and THIS IS MY MEMORIAL UNTO ALL GENERATIONS." (verse 15)

It's really tough in this modern day Babylon of religious confusion to get a grasp on God's name... when it seems that everyone has his own "pokeman" (pocket god) to call upon.

But, according to YOUR Bible, Jesus Christ is the Eternal Creator God of the Old Testament.

"All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made." (John 1:3)

"He was in the world, and THE WORLD WAS MADE BY HIM, and the world knew Him not." (verse 10)

And it's truly amazing how the vast majority of literally hundreds of modern professing Christian denominations don't know that.

Jesus told Moses that He is theEternal (JHVH; LORD) God (Elohim, a uni-plural word like "family" or "club" - one family or club composed of more than one person... as Jesus says: I and My Father are one - John 10:30) of the three patriarchs of the children of Israel: the God (Elohim, family) of Abraham, the God (Elohim, family) of Isaac, and the God (Elohim, family) of Jacob!!!

That's His name: the Eternal God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!

Jesus Christ is the member of the God Family (the WORD) who speaks for the Father, performs the work the Father wants done, and it was He who entered into covenant relationship (marriage) with the children of Israel.

That's who the "LORD" or "Jehovah" is.

In the strictest sense... neither one was taken out of the Bible nor replaced by the other. Neither one is the original inspiration... JHVH is. They both mean "Eternal." And the Eternal's name is: I AM.

The Eternal's name is: The Eternal God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

"Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM." (John 8:58)

"And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." (Gal.3:29)

Christ is Jehovah. Christ is the LORD. Christ/ I AM. And all who belong to Christ are children of Israel... who stand to inherit the promises of The Eternal God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob: the Kingdom of God and Eternal Life.
