Lincoln was worried about Maryland seceding due to the close proximity to Washington, DC. To prevent Maryland from seceding he suspended Habeas Corpus in Maryland. This allowed him to arrest Maryland residents without giving any reason or explanation. If they dared talk of seceding they could be imprisoned.
Secession is the formal withdrawal of a member state from an association or union. Several different states had threatened secession in the first decades of the history of the United States, but it was only with South Carolina's secession from the Union on December 20, 1860 that the possibility became a reality. Lincoln was completely against secession because, as mentioned in his House Divided Speech, "A house divided against itself cannot stand, I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free." Lincolns goal in this speech was to differentiate himself from Stephen Douglas by saying that the united states cannot exist divided, it must either be all slave or all free. Obviously Lincoln was pushing for all free, however he wanted a gradual emancipation of the slaves.
Specifically, because it could have threatened Washngton D.C. - quite apart from tilting the balance of power in favour of the Confederates.

Abraham Lincoln faced the secession crisis that erupted into the Civil War.
President elect Abraham Lincoln viewed secession as being unconstitutional. He was hesitant, however, to use force to forbid states to actually secede. On the other hand, President Buchanan also saw secession as illegal but unlike Lincoln, did not believe the federal government had the constitutional authority to use force against states that did secede.
Lee and Lincoln both felt that secession would damage the country, and allthough there were many contrasting points of view in the nation at the time, they felt that it would be a bad idea to permit any secession.
Ha-ha I don't know.. listen to the teacher next time!
Federal Right
Anti-secession means against a seperation of the country. Anti means against, and secession means a seperation of the country. For example, the Union was anti-secession during the Civil War.
He was right.
The issues that led to the secession had been festering for a long time, but it was the election of Abraham Lincoln that precipitated the secession.
Because most of population was against the secession.
Lincolnbelieved the Southern Secession should be met with force. Lincolnthought it was illegal.
Both presidents Lincoln and Buchanan believed that secession was unconstitutional. They did differ, however, on one important point. Buchanan, unlike Lincoln, however, did not believe that the federal government had the constitutional power to resist secession through the use of force.
As illegal and a violation of the US Constitution.
