Nathaniel Bacon was a Virginia colonist most famous for instigating what is known as "Bacon's Rebellion" in 1676. He led other colonists in an armed rebellion against Governor William Berkeley for a variety of reasons, most immediately because the governor had prohibited the settlers from retaliating against the Native Americans for recent attacks on their settlements.
