He wasn't assassinated, although there was an attemptedassassination by John Hinkley, Jr. on March 30, 1981.

Hinkley was obsessed with actress Jodie Foster and saw the film Taxi Driver numerous times. He identified with the film's lead character, Travis Bickle, who attempts to protect a 12-year-old prostitute, played by Foster. Part of the film involves Bickle attempting to assassinate a US Senator who is running for president. This evolved into Hinkley's own thoughts of assassinating a political figure - to become famous and, in his mind, be on the same celebrity level as Foster. He began stalking then-President Jimmy Carter, whose term then ended and Reagan's began, so he wasn't so much targeting the man but rather the office.

Reagan died June 5, 2004 at the age of 93. He had been officially diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1994, although there was much speculation that he had, in fact, been suffering from it for some years previous to that.

As bizarre as it may seem, Hinckley claimed that he did it to impress actress Jodie Foster. (Hinckley is still in custody, incarcerated in St. Elizabeth's Mental Hospital in Washington, D.C..)
