Sir Joseph Banks was a botanist who travelled with James Cook ship on his journey to New South Wales. He was famous for being the one whose influence and recommendation led to New South Wales being colonised for the purpose of establishing a convict colony.

Banks also identified a number of new species of both plants and animals in Australia. The banksia genus of plants is named after him. Banks also influenced the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew to the point where they became a world famous institution.
