In 1730, South Carolina Royal Governor Robert Johnson divided unsettled land in South Carolina into townships and offered low cost land and tools to entice immigrants. This helped to protect the white colonists from perceived threats from Native Americans and the large and growing African slave population. After the townships were created, immigrants arrived from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ireland, Germany and other European areas throughout the eighteenth century.
