Education In Sparta wanted a strong army, they had boys at the age of seven move into military housed called barracks. They also taught them how to read. Athens education was different, only boys with wealthy families could go to school and learn, they prepared them to be good citizens and studied many things, like math, reading etc.
Sparta had taken over large tracts of fertile land, and turned the populace into serfs - giving half their produce to the city. This allowed the Spartans to concentrate their efforts to matters military to defend the land form invason and pillaging.
Athens hadlimited land, and relied partly on trade to survive, until it took over and empire of Greek cities in Asia Minor from the Persians, and could live high on the proceeds. Thier military activity was part-time, in between farming/manufacturing.trading/fishing and fighting to retain its empire.
They had more freedom in Sparta, they got to learn how to read and write and go to school while in Athens they weren't aloud to do those things and had to learn weaving and other things that could help out around the house.
In Sparta, boys were given to the barracks so they could be trained since they valued winning wars rather than having educated people. In Athens, on the other hand, they weren't. They remained with their families.
