Why was Toronto 'found'? I didn't even know Toronto was 'lost'. (Sorry, but I just couldn't resist.) Toronto was incorporated as a city on March 6, 1834. Prior to that, the settlement was known as the Town of York, and before that just 'muddy York.' The British government created the Province of Upper Canada through the Constitution Act, 1791, a few years after the end of the American Revolution. In 1796, Upper Canada's first Lieutenant Governor, John Graves Simcoe, decided to relocate the capital of Upper Canada away from Newark (now Niagara-on-the-Lake) because a capital located in the Niagara area was vulnerable to attack from the United States. He sought a strategic location that provided a natural harbour, as well as one that could be easily fortified. Fort York was built at the entrance to the harbour, and a townsite was located a couple of miles to the east. Toronto is still Ontario's capital. Toronto is the financial capital of Canada, and the cultural capital of English Canada. Toronto is the most multi-ethnic and multi-cultural city in the world. By population, Toronto is Canada's largest city, and the fifth largest in North America. It would appear that Lieutenant Governor Simcoe made a sound choice.
