The Mandan and Hidatsa people helped Lewis and Clark by allowing them to winter in the Mandan villages. They also traded extensively. The Sioux allowed safe passage for the expedition. The Shoshones cared for Lieutenant Clark and his party when they became violently ill in Idaho and welcomed the entire expedition as they arrived. The Chinook people of the lower Columbia welcomed the expedition and allowed them to winter safely. Several other tribes and bands assisted the explorers, including the Otos, Osage, and others.
