When Hitler invaded Poland in September 1939 Britian and France declared war on Germany as they had treaties with Poland.
After the fall of France in June 1940 Britian remained alone as the only country able to resist Hitler. The Soviet Union did not enter the war until Germany invaded Russia in June 1941. The USA did not enter the war until after Pearl harbour in December 1941.
