They remade the movie because it was such a hit. They thought they could make more money on it and make it more enjoyable for people by making it in 3d and blue ray. I personally do not think they need to do that, but people are always trying to make money.
Actually:The Lion King new release is not a remake, it is a reformatting of the old film.

He wanted to honor his good best friend and partner Frank Well who passed away before the movie came out.
He wanted to show royal familythat poor people can have the same happiness and sadness in life.

The 2004 straight-to-DVD movie, The Lion King 1½ was released internationally under the title The Lion King 3: Hakuna Matata. There was no specific reason as to 'why' the title was changed, it was simply released under a different title despite having nothing to do with advancing the story from the first two films.
