One doesn't come into that kind of political power from those circumstances without making some enemies. By contrast, his famous opponent, Richard the Lionheart, who could claim his throne as the result of his "royal blood," was wildly popular with the English, even though he rarely visited his kingdom and was a massive drain on its economy.

However, most Muslims actually supported Saladin. He was unpopular with only small groups of Muslims.
