Eleanor of Aquitaine lived from 1122 or 1124 to 1 April 1204. This is the era known as the High Middle Ages when Catholicism was the only religion in Europe (aside from a minute Jewish population) and the Barbarian invasions and ceased (aside from some Muslim raids in the south of Europe.) This was a time of great flourishing of the Christendom, the dark cloud of Protestantism was not yet on the horizon, and Europe was reaping the benefits of peace and technology that had its beginnings back in the reign of Charlemagne. The world was Catholic, at peace, and prosperous for the first time in centuries. Man gladly gave their lives to the Crusades in order to attain peace in the Holy Land and to liberate their fellow Christians from the nightmare of Muslim rule. It was the golden age of Christendom which would survive only to be shattered by the Protestant revolt several centuries later.
