The constitution sets the framework for the government of the United States, separating powers, instituting a system of checks and balances, and creating a form of republican government that stabilized the nascent country in its early years and held it together until today. The Articles of Confederation, the first constitution, were too weak and ineffective, as displayed by the ordeal of Shay's Rebellion. The constitution gave more power to the federal government allowing it to carry out its duties.
