The US chose NOT to deploy nuclear weapons. (The US did deploy nuclear weapons against Japan in WWII). The US chose NOT to invade North Vietnam. (The US did invade North Korea during the Korean War).
The Americans fought with the Russians in WW2 to over throw the German Nazi's. In the cold war they were no longer allies because of their different political views and went in war. they never fought head to head but in Vietnam the vietkongs (or nva im not sure) were supplied by the Russians. al though there were conflict they never fought head to head
