Hannibal was the leader of Carthage during the second Punic war. He led a campaign against the Romans, and no one could defeat him in battle until Scipio was sent. Even though he was defeated, Hannibal is considered one of the great military leaders of antiquity.

Hannibal was the leader of the Carthaginian possessions in Spain, which belonged to his family. He was one of the greatest military commanders of antiquity.

Hannibal invaded Italy with the intention of taking Rome in the Second Punic War. He marched from Spain and crossed the Alps in the snowy winter. During this crossing he lost the siege machines which he needed to take Rome. He routed the armies of the Romans and their Italian allies three times. However, instead of marching on Rome he went to southern Italy, probably because he did not have siege machines. He inflicted an even greater defeat of the Romans and their allies at the Battle of Cannae. However, he then got bogged down in the south of Italy and the Romans continually mobilised new armies and pushed him into Calabria (the toe of Italy). When the Romans attacked Carthage's homeland (in present day Tunisia), Hannibal was recalled. He was defeated at the last battle of the war.

After the war Hannibal was elected as head of government in Carthage. He tackled corruption and undertook reforms to weaken the arbitrary power of the Carthaginian oligarchy and to increase tax revenues to pay for the war indemnity to Rome. The oligarchy presented accusations against Hannibal to Rome. The Romans demanded that Hannibal be surrendered to them. Hannibal opted for exile.

Hannibal went to Tyre in Phoenicia, Carthage's mother city. He then became a military adviser to Antiochus III, the Seleucid king, who was preparing for war against Rome. During the war Hannibal was put in charge of the Seleucid fleet, but was defeated. When Antiochus seemed willing to hand Hannibal over to the Romans he fled to Crete and then to Armenia where he built a new city for the king. He then went to Bithynia (in north-western Turkey) whose king, Prusias, was at war with Pergamon, a Roman ally. Hannibal won a naval battle and two land battles. The Romans said that they would attack Bithynia if Hannibal was not handed over. Prusias agreed. Hannibal poisoned himself.

First of all, Hannibal was not a Roman, he was a Carthaginian and a sworn enemy of Rome. He was important because of his military skills and his threat to Rome. After his defeat, the Romans were in sole control of most of the Mediterranean.
