Because if Robert E. Lee had won at the Battle of Gettysburg, then there is a good chance that the people of the North would stop supporting the Union Army and Lee would have successfully invaded Northern Territory destorying the Union Armies morale.

∙ 11y agoGettysburg's immediate importance was that it ended Lee's invasion of the North, but its importance has been exaggerated by many historians, particularly battle tactic historians. Strategically, it was not a decisive battle. It could have been had Meade been able to affect an effective pursuit. Had he been able to cut Lee off before Lee reached the safety of Virginia, Mead may have ended the war. Instead, it dragged on another year and nine months. Its main importance may have been its missed opportunity.

∙ 9y agoThe Battle of Gettysburg stopped the Confederate advance on Washington D.C. Had the Confederates been able to push past Meade's forces, they would have marched right to the Union's capital, spilling certain doom for any unification at the time and 2 separate States or America.
