The primary benefit of the Panama Canal was that it allowed easy access from the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean without the hassle and danger of rounding South America. It made the cost of doing business in North America, especially between the West and East coasts much easier and monetarily effective.

Aside from commercial trade enhancement, the Panama Canal, and the US control of it helped the US navy traveling in either direction. It was also important in that the US had invested men and material in the project. As an aside, malaria was beaten back.
