Prior to Crick and Watson's 1953 paper in Nature , literally NOBODY was going to publish a paper giving the CORRECT structure of DNA. Linus Pauling was on the right track for doing so but, at that time, he still thought DNA was a triple helix. Rosalind Franklin had the information that COULD have allowed her to write a paper before C & W, but she was too cautious a researcher to make the leaps of logic they did.It's certainly true that, if C & W had not done their work, SOMEBODY would have made the discovery they did. But the fact remains that they WERE the first.
