Germany was attempting to get Mexico as an ally. The US was headed for Europe in '17; didn't need to have to fight Mexico so close to home.

Because the Zimmerman telegram was intercepted stating that Germany was attempting to get Mexico as an ally for WWI. Not wanting to tempt Mexico on siding with Germany (w/Mexico being on the US border) the US decided to get as far away from a possible clash (w/Mexico) as practical.
