Alexander the great made sure that the soldiers fighting for him were driven to win battles by making sure that they were significantly rewarded with the spoils of their conquests. He would fight alongside them and off the battlefield would spend time with his soldiers talking and listening to them and making sure that they felt that they were an important part of his campaign. This appearance of unity and camaraderie in addition to Alexanders courage and fortitude induced familiarity and affection from his men. The soldiers, however, also knew that Alexander could be ruthless to anyone betraying him and the consequences for anyone even suspected of betrayal and dissent would be brutal.
