CommentI think that the Great Depression probably emphasized and focused the reasons people usually favor authoritarian government. The rise of dictatorships. The political unrest and poor economic conditions that developed after World War I enabled dictatorships to arise in several countries, especially in those countries that lacked a tradition of democratic government. During the 1920's and 1930's, dictatorships came to power in the Soviet Union, Italy, Germany, and Japan. They held total power and ruled without regard to law. The dictatorships used terror and secret police to crush opposition to their rule. People who objected risked imprisonment or execution.
They appeal to a people's want for change. If you like at most dictators, they always take power after a terrible economic period, another tyrant, or a war gone wrong. People are allured to the dictator by a want for something better because things couldn't get any worse. Examples of this include, Hitler after the Great Depression, Fidel Castro after Batista, and Lenin after Czar Nicholas.
