The American Colonies belonged to England, and its King George III. If the settlers in a colony got out of line, the king and the Parliament would pass laws to show the colonists that England was in total and complete control of them.

It was a game that King George III, played. He did everything he could to place stress, hardship, injustice, tyranny, and even death to continue to keep the colonists down.

But, eventually, with the Boston Tea Party, that happened on December 16, 1773, and the Intolerable Acts, passed by Parliament in 1774, it would be the beginning of the end for the British Empire's hold on America.

When the colonies were under British rule and they did not follow their procedure they got punished. Common ways of punishment were to impose taxes on good imported from countries that were not Britain. Another way was to cut off supply to the colonies so they would have to find their own way around.
