In Japan, the Japanese were aided by the US and they were able to recover substantially fast. The US sent businessmen and scientists to aid them in their recovery of the economic base. Europe was nearly bankrupt in all the nations. Germany was bankrupt. They had to rebuild their economy and rebuild a nation which had been reduced to rubble. The US created the Marshall Plan to assist nations affected by World War 2. It provided loans, monetary gifts, seeds, farm equipment and building equipment and food or medications. This did help Europe, part of Africa and Asian nations to reconstruct and repair their economies.
After WW 2, Europe was in severe trouble. The economy had been damaged, or outright destroyed. People would not be able to work since roads, railroads, schools, factories, hospitals, bridges, dams, water, power and phone systems had been destroyed. The Marshall Plan targeted helping rebuild Europe to prevent people from dying from disease and starvation, and to help preserve democratic governments in Europe.

Napoleon was able to conquer continental Europe due to his superior army and tactics. However the French Navy was inferior to the British Navy so he could not easily invade and defeat Britain. Britain, meanwhile, was free to aid the enemies of Napoleon in Europe by subsidising them and sending them supplies. Napoleon attempted to destroy Britain by destroying its trade. He forbade any country under his control to trade with Britain or accept British goods. This would deprive the British of their revenue and, he hoped, force them to stop supporting his opponents in Europe. The strategy was ultimately unsuccessful.

Three words: nationalism, imperialism, industrialism. Europe was the first region to industrialize, meaning it had access to superior weaponry before anyone else. Because of the superior weapons and strong military that Europe had been developing, this allowed for Europe to imperialize other regions, Africa in particular, and allowed for a stronghold over natural resources and was able to spread its own ideologies to other countries (such as nationalism).

I've picked up a few Japanese broadcasts before using a shortwave radio but the main one is NHK. I've been able to hear that in both the UK and the Rep. of Ireland.Currently to Europe (correct as of April 2012) is 5975 kHz. The programme is only on for 30 minutes each day in English from 0500~0530 UTC.There are no longer any NHK Japanese broadcasts to Europe any more but you might be able to pick up some of the NHK transmissions to the Middle East and Northern Africa as they relayed from Europe.http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/english/radio/shortwave/index.html (you can download the frequencies and schedule list)If this link doesn't work go to the NHK Radio website and look from there.Apart from NHK there are other radio stations but I don't really know many that broadcast in Japanese to Europe although they do broadcast elsewhere. You may be able to pick up their transmissions even though they are not aiming at Europe.
