If you're talking about the discoveries epoch, let's say Portugal was the most powerful nation on Earth, since all trades from all over the world would end up in Lisbon (the capital). Portugal was so important in term of commercial and financial trade that the most important artisans and craftmasters, jewelers, merchants etc settled in Lisbon during the time. Also, the portuguese territory was commercialy very well situated because of the growing trades and acquisitions the Portuguese kings propelled and encouraged by sending such great explorers and navigators like Magellan and Vasco da Gama to far continents. Being the westernmost country in Europe, and having routes to Africa, India and the far east (Japan) provided the portuguese commercial prosperity, as well as a huge political leverage. Besides the country itself, Portugal once ruled half of the world thanks to the Treaty of Tordesillas, where Spain and Portugal 'split' the globe in two and each nation ruled their side.
