Only seven people were chosen for the Mercury program. Six out of the seven astronauts chosen had a Mercury flight. Deke Slayton was grounded because he had a heart problem (a heart murmur to be exact). There were only six named Mercury spacecraft, due to the fact that only six of the Original Seven astronauts flew in the Mercury program (Deke Slayton was grounde due to heart defibrillation).
