The Spartan's were primaraly Hoplites, that means they used to shields called Hoploms and large spears, The shields were important because they helped form the formation as each soldier used his shield to cover the man next to him called a phalanx, And pointed there spears down and marched forward to create a barrier of shield and spear.

also because a lone spartan warrior could swing the shield so strong that it could simulate a car crash and kill another warrior
