Transylvania, situated in Central Romania, is surrounded by Carpathian Mountain Ranges which is noted for the scenic beauty of its landscapes. This region also has a history of dukes, fiefdoms and castles. But, Bram Stoker, the nineteenth century Irish author, selected this Carpathian Mountain Ranges in Transylvania as the background for his famous novel Dracula for another reason. The fifteenth century noble lord Dracul who was a member of the Order of Dragons who fought against Ottoman Turks lived in a castle in Transylvania. In 1431, his son, Count Vlad, the central character in Bram Stoker's novel, was born there as the son of Dracul. Dracula in Romanian means, the son of Dracul. Of course, a noble lord named Dracul and his son named Vlad having ever lived in Transylvania has been questioned later.

Vampires as we know them in popular culture were not specifically born in Transylvania. The association between vampires and Transylvania comes from Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" where the vampire Count Dracula is depicted as coming from Transylvania. The region's history, folklore, and mysterious reputation likely contributed to the creation of this famous vampire character.

They weren't. The Transylvania vampire is Count Dracula and there were vampires around long before him. It just that he was so formidable and so famous most everything to do with vampires is accredited to him.
