It's definitely a transmission problem. Any further analysis will require a bit of hands-on work to determine the cause.

my 2000 gose in reverse but not drive
rear wheel drive , or 4x4 capable , and with the 5.0 liter V8 an all wheel drive system was available on the 2000 Ford Explorer
Everything points to the transmission being rebuilt or replaced. The reverse band broke, came loose etc.
Your going to have to get your transmission rebuilt or get another put in.

the forward gear clutch pack is worn out. the only solution is to get the transmission rebult.
Once you disconnect the negative side of battery for approx. 5 min, put vehicle in drive and pull forward and this should clear the ABS light. Will not clear automatically after starting or in reverse.
The transmission is kaput. Time for a rebuild.

On a 2000 Ford Explorer , that has the Control Trac 4x4 system , or if it is an All Wheel Drive system ( V8 only ) that has no low range . ( the transfer case is bolted to the rear of the transmission )
