If it's the brake light in the boot lid then you have to take the cover off the inside of the boot lid and then you will have access to the light bulbs. If it's the brake light in the rear quarter panel then you open boot lid and unscrew the two bolts holding the light cluster and slide it backwards, then you will have access to the bulbs

behind the glovebox ============================================ According to the 1996 Ford Contour Owner's Manual, "The instrument panel fuse panel is underneath the instrument panel on the left side. To open it, reach under the instrument panel and push the release button to the right of the fuse panel." That's about as good of a description as any you'll find. If you look under the instrument panel to the left of the steering column, you should see it.

Open the drivers door and look at the lower dash and you will see a panel that can be removed and that is where you will find the fuse.

Open the boot, and pull away the compartment at the relevant side. You should then be able to access a panel, where there are two clips you will need to squeeze, which then releases the lights. Pull the bulb panel toward you and replace the third bulb down!

Has the instrument light dimmer wheel, beside your headlight switch on the dash been rotated down to the lowest position ? Or, if you mean your warning lamps, I know that on my 1995 there is a 10 amp fuse in location # 11 , in the fuse panel on the driver's end of the dash panel (visible with driver's door open) for the warning lamps.

There is a small micro switch located within the door of the boot somewhere? if this is faulty it will release the boot by itself. I think it is located either behind the boot door internal panel or behind the exterior boot door handle you press to open.

The words "Boot Open" means the trunk lid is open. Cheers, Jeff

On mine it was located in the boot. If you were to open the tailgate and look into the boot there was a panel on the left side of the boot floor that lifted up, much like lifting the bit where the spare wheel is kept but its the section that doesn't lift up when you lift the spare wheel bit up. That nearly makes sense I think. On mine it was located in the boot. Does the symbol of the car appear to have its boot open? If so, it means your boot or hatch isn't closed properly. Close it properly and the light should go out.
