the 3.1 motor is a typical pushrod style motor, much smaller and more compact than the larger 3.4L which is a Twin Dual Overhead Cam using four overhead camshafts and 24 valves. They are two completely different style egines with the 3.4L X code being relatively short production while the 3.1L was a longer production run more commonly used GM engine in various GM vehicles.
