I would remove the speedometer cable end out of the tranmission mounted on the left hand side and clean with brake cleaner then put some white lithium grease (sold at napa in a small container) or use wheel bearing grease as a substitute will work. Then reinstall.I may recommend pulling the main part of the dash out has 4 screws that hold it in two on top and two on the bottom and remove the cable where it attaches to the speedometer and grease it.These old analog gauges will freeze up due to lack of lubrication over time or the needles will jump, drag,or not move.I seriously doubt the cable is broken but,if it is advance auto or auto zone can get it or maybe a local shop that does speedometer calibriations.Start simple clean and grease the cable ends and worst case u do the above and gauge still does not work, you would need a new speedometer(not likely with the old bseries).Time to do this about 30 minutes and note just wipe old grease out on the cable end going to speedometer itself and put some new grease in it(brake cleaner will mess up plastic around the area)Piece of cake.
check all your fuses and battery connections?
VSS ( Vehical Speed Sensor ) located on your transmission
Just pray for it to come back on mine always does. Also stop slamming on the dashboard.

Replace the Flasher Relay.
well that's not to hard to answer. my truck did the same thing i replace the speedometer cable and sensor in the transmission and i never had that problem since. try that first and see what happens if that wont work then replace the speedometer panel in the dashboard.
wish i knew have the same prob on my 93 377 peterbilt
IF the speedometer is not working it is because the computer is note getting a signal from the trans. and will not tell it to shift. Try replacing the speedometer the sensor in the tail shaft of the trans.
