The first and most often reason is that the OD is turned off.
on the side of the shifter there is a od button
your transmission is having problems by the sound of it. go to a transmission shop.

93 tranny is electronic if your speedo isn't working it won't shift into 3 or OD. Your speed sensor is more than likely the problem.
the overdrive gear in those transmissions usually do fail, but u dont need a new tranny

If there is an OD off light on the dash, overdrive is turned off.
There's a button on the left side of the gearshift, under the T-handle. Push it once. There should be a little green light by the speedometer that indicates if you're in OD mode, or not.
The OD button means "Over Drive", off or on.
The transmission is starting to go, its probably got a failing pump, or the computer is acting out for some reason, but the transmission is electronically controlled, it see's signals from various sensors on the transmission and decides when to go into overdrive, temperature and pressure determine when it will use OD. temp to low it will wait in 3rd longer to let the trans warm up some more, and then the pressure builds to a certain level and lets it shift. if its taking longer and longer... more than likely its just worn out, worn out trans has looser clearance tolerances so there's more space for the fluid to leak past and lower the overall line pressure, if the line pressure isn't high enough the computer wont let it shift.
