Check your battery cables. I have replaced my negative cable twice now. It runs about 6 feet down underneath to the side of the block and it's a pain to get it tight because it's hard to reach the bolt. Until you get it good and tight, you may still experience trouble starting the van which acts just like a dead battery.

Battery not charging?

battery tests good, alternator tests good, new voltage regulator installed and still no charge to battery from altanator .

How do you test the alternator on a 1973 VW Beetle?

Start the car and rev it to at least 1500RPMs. Use a voltmeter to test the voltage across the two battery terminals (under the back seat). If it tests out at around 13.8-14.5 volts the alternator is working. If it tests out at 12.6 volts or below the alternator isn't charging. If it tests out above 14.5 volts the alternator is charging, but the voltage regulator isn't working correctly.

Why is my 1984 Corvette alternator charging constant 16.3 volts?

The system shouldn't exceed 15 volts. If the battery tests out okay and you are mechanically inclined, you can replace just the voltage regulator inside the original 1984 alternator. A replacement regulator should cost aprox $30.

Jeep Cherokee alternator doesn't charge battery alternator tests fine when not in vehicle?

check your fuses if they are good the voltage regulator is in the pcm eng computer

How can tell if the battery is bad or the alternator?

Take the battery to a parts store so they can test it.... Actually you need to test both the battery and the alternator because if your alternator is not functioning correctly it can drain the battery of power... so just testing the battery may only tell you that you have a drained battery and not reveal the cause... This testing can be done using an Auto meter which tests the battery and also does an alternator load test...If you do not have a tester you can rent one from an auto parts store,or you can remove the alternator and take it to the auto parts store and have it bench tested along with the battery...usually for free...

What would cause the battery to not charge even when the alternator tests good on a 93 Mercury Cougar?

the battery could have a dead cell, this could cause it to not charge. Have the battery tested to be sure.

How do you know if your alternator is bad on your chrysler cirrus if your car will not start?

In general, if the alternator is bad, then the battery becomes discharged and does not have the energy to crank the engine. The starter could also be bad, possibly damaged by the high current resulting from cranking with low voltage. That's a "bad news - bad news" situation, as high crank current can also damage the battery. Check for plate buckling, often seen as expansion of the battery case." To isolate this, you need to charge the battery with an external charger. Starting from a fully charged battery, you will quickly see if there is a battery or starter problem, or a problem with the control circuitry. Then, with the engine running, you check the charging voltage and current. The voltage should be between 13.5V and 14.5V. If it is low, you need to consider alternator or regulator, or shorted cell in the battery. See below for charging current. It is also possible that the regulator circuit is at fault, maybe caused by a blown fuse. If all looks good, you need to consider the age of the battery and its ability to hold a charge. It is also possible that a system load, such as a light being on, is draining the battery. Don't forget to check unexpected lights, such as glove box, trunk, and engine compartment. Some of these tests, charging and standby voltage, can be measured with an ordinary voltmeter, and battery charge state can be assessed by measuring the electrolyte's specific gravity. Other tests, such as crank and charge current, battery hold time, etc. are more involved and require specific equipment.

How do you troubleshoot the alternator when it will not charge and has 15V coming out of it that is not going to the battery after changing the thermostat on a 1997 Dodge Ram Van?

If the alternator tests out OK (most auto parts stores will test one for free), then follow the large wire from the alternator to the battery and test continuity. There is probably one or two fuses or fusible links. Hope this helps. Mark

What could be causing a 1995 dodge Neon with a new battery and alternator to stop running after 5 minutes and require a boost to get it restarted?

Check the voltage at your battery with the car running. You should have 13.5 to 15.5 volts. If you don't see this, your alternator is not charging. If that is the case, I would first check all my battery cables and connections for wear or corrosion, also your ground straps on the body and engine. If you check the voltage at the alternator and still see less than 13.5 volts, either your fan belt is too loose, dragging on something like a frozen AC compressor, or your new alternator has gone bad again. If all tests good, check for a bad accessory that is shorted or drawing way too much current. If your battery cables get way too hot, this may be the case.

How do you test for a bad alternator?

While the engin is running remove the negative side of the battery. If your car dies, your alternator is probably bad...Of it it wasn't when you started, there's a good chance it is now.NEVER disconnect the battery or alternator while the engine is running. You can fry alternator diodes, computers in the car, electronics you have installed, pretty much any sensitive electronics can be damaged or destroyed.Take your car to get it checked. Most autoparts stores these days will do free alternator tests.

What does it mean if a 2001 VW Beetle stops and the battery symbol shows?

The red battery symbol indicates that there is a problem with the charging system. It could be the alternator (faulty), voltage regulator (old), bad battery (old). or a blown fuse. If possible, after checking the fuses, you may have to recharge the battery overnight and then drive the vehicle to an automotive store (a close one) that can test the suspected equipment. I say this because it is near impossible to remove the alternator on a 2001 beetle (I had the same problem) and could not remove it myself to take in for testing, due to the tight space of its location and the other systems that were blocking access to the 2 bolts. If the alternator tests good, look at replacing the voltage regulator. The alternator can still be putting out the correct amount of charge and be good, but if the regulator goes out it may not show on the test. The voltage regulator is a small voltage sensor with brushes in it...should be around $75

Your 1999 cadillac deville battery not charging is on won't get a charge?

Take your car to a nearby business that tests your battery and charging system for free, around here Shucks and Les Schwab do that kind of thing. It costs nothing and they can usually get you a diagnosis. Probably your voltage regulator or alternator. If battery more than 3 yrs old, may need to replace it.Diagnostics usually only take a few minutes.
