The American Government Purchased it From France. Very Ironically France was Broke from supporting the 13 colonies breaking away from Britain.
Both France and Spain supported the United States. France supplied soldiers, their Navy, and loans, while Spain supplied money. While both countries supported America's ideals, they were equally interested in supporting the Americans as a way of weakening their hated English rivals.
France took a very active roll in supporting the American colonists during the American Revolution. France had a long-term rivalry with England, so when America fought against England for independence, France naturally aligned with the Americans.

There were several reasons. First, the French populace was experiencing upheavals and social shifts; supporting the American colonies during the Revolutionary War was seen as supporting the transition from a monarchy to a democracy in France. Second, France and Britain were two of the major global powers during the Renaissance (Spain is generally considered the third, with Italy, Holland, Prussia and Austria also being notable). By supporting the revolting colonies, France was in essence fighting a proxy war against the British. Third, France held several territories in the New World, including much of what is now Quebec in Canada. By supporting the American colonies, the French were able to maintain control of their previous territories and protect them from encursions by British colonists through a buffer provided by the new United States of America.
