There were several reasons. First, the French populace was experiencing upheavals and social shifts; supporting the American colonies during the Revolutionary War was seen as supporting the transition from a monarchy to a democracy in France.
Second, France and Britain were two of the major global powers during the Renaissance (Spain is generally considered the third, with Italy, Holland, Prussia and Austria also being notable). By supporting the revolting colonies, France was in essence fighting a proxy war against the British.
Third, France held several territories in the New World, including much of what is now Quebec in Canada. By supporting the American colonies, the French were able to maintain control of their previous territories and protect them from encursions by British colonists through a buffer provided by the new United States of America.
