It depends on the Muslim and it depends on the type of democracy advocated.
Most Muslims that advocate for democracy want democracy because it (1) creates political accountability, (2) allows people to have a real say in their own affairs, (3) is usually correlated with strong economies, and (4) is usually more peaceful to its own citizens and less likely to declare war on its neighbors.
Some Muslims want a purely secular democracy, which would create a separation between Islam and the politics of the country. These individuals are called Secularists. These Muslims point to the US which demonstrates that you can have a strong religious culture that is protected by the state's inability to regulate debates between religion. Naturally, secularism is more popular among less religious Muslims who also point out that they would prefer to live Islam their own way as opposed to having the government impose some other version of Islam on them by Fiat.
Some Muslims want a democracy informed by Islamic values. These individuals are called Islamists. There are a wide variety of Islamist positions within the ambit of democracy supporters, ranging from minimally intrusive parties like Tunisia's an-Nahda to the setup of the Iranian Islamic Republic which has strong religious supervision. Islamists who support democracy hold that there are a number of political questions such as questions of international relations, internal economics, etc. that Islam can speak to, but is not definitive on, which allows democracy to adjudicate the validity of these opinions. Conversely, there are religious questions for which there are clear answers, such as homosexuality that should be left to the jurists in order to create a moral society.
