The TCU (Tranaxle control unit) puts the car into limp mode. Might be the TCU, but more likely than not, it is a transmission problem. Removing power from the TCU erases the memory, until it sees the fault again and puts the car into limp mode.
Mitsubishi was the manufacturer of the 1999 eclipse. It was the second generation of the Eclipse series. The Mitsubishi eclipse series stopped production in 2011.
Most likely you will have to replace it.

I had my 00 eclipse gt automatic do this. took it to mr transmition and they cleared codes that popped up and it stopped. if i drove forward for a while and warmed the car up, then reverse would work. hope this helps.
