Why would a 2005 cavalier shut off while driving but minutes later start back up?

had this problem once and it drove me crazy....
turned out there was a switch that shut off the valves for gas, if the car got rear-ended in an accident to prevent explosions. The switch was shorting out. So it would randomly shut off the gas flow then start up again after 15 min. Don't have a clue if your problem is the same or if your car has this feature...but doesn't hurt to ask.
