ABSOLUTELY take your cat to the vet if you're sure he/she is not able to urinate!! cats can become "blocked" - preventing them from urinating. this is a VERY critical problem...but one that can be taken care of with proper vet care.

∙ 16y agoIf the odor in the litterbox is very strong. The cat will not go in when it smells too bad. The urine itself smells like strong ammonia. The cat's face will shake off cant stand the smell to go in so they will go somewhere else they think is ok to use the restroom. Tips: Clean the litter box every other day as possible as you can. Your cat will be happy. Multi-cats need to clean abt everyday. Hope that helps

∙ 14y agoIt might be too young to use the bathroom. Kittens need assistance to poo or pee until they are 4-5 weeks of age. Normally the mother cat would lick the genitals to make the baby use the potty, but if the kitten is taken early it needs to be done with a warm wet rag, just like the mother would help, you would need to help. By 5 weeks the kitten should be able to poo and pee on its own.

∙ 11y agoSudden, more frequent urination may be a sign of Cystitis (inflammation of the bladder), or some other bladder problem. This condition, much like human bladder infections, is very painful for the cat and in some cases (such as a blockage) can be life-threatening if not treated. The cat should be taken to a vet immediately.
As well as needing to urinate more often than usual, other symptoms include: Blood in urine, avoidance of the litterbox as a cat will associate the pain with the litter box and may choose a softer spot to wee, and constant licking of the genital area.
Cats usually develop urinary problems from stress or not drinking enough water and the urine becomes too concentrated. This can occur if the cat is fed only dry food (a cat has evolved to get moisture from its food and so have a low "thirst drive") or overly stressed.
The most important treatment, aside from vet-prescribed pain killers (and antibiotics if an infection is present), is to increase your cat's water intake. Feeding wet food instead of dry, adding a little extra water to the wet food and/or providing a water fountain to entice the cat to drink more water are very good options. Even adding "flavoured water" such as juice from canned fish to food or water will help entice a cat to drink.

∙ 11y agoThat's a broad question with many possible health and behavioral answers. When that happened to my cat it was that his litter box was old and just smelled bad to him. When I bought him a fresh clean box with fresh clean litter everything resolved itself. I hope you find it's the same for you.

It should be safe with a few precautions. Use the long handled plastic scoops to take the urine & feces out of the cat litter. Put this in another bag and take out to the garbage can.
