check when pump was installed ,you got pump lever on correct side of cam. also check that you got in fuel lines( in from pump,and from pump to engine) on correct sides

Your fuel pump is probably bad, or the ground wire is, hitting it makes it work, but I would suspect that it quits often. Best to replace the pump.

More than likely the float is bad on the fuel pump, so i would recommend that you change the fuel pump.
