Mabe the girl knows the brother and trusts him, or mabe she just needs somebody to talk to about her crush and wants to know what to do in this situation.

If you mean that the question is from you, the girl's crush, and the brother said 'Merry Christmas' and the girl and parents said 'thank you', then maybe it's a bit odd they didn't say Merry Christmas back, but perhaps they are slightly more formal than I am. Still not weird.
